Zero Waste – National Drug Takeback Day 9/25

This from Zero Waste Alliance – locations in SATX, and things moving in Austin we could emulate!

Do you need to get rid of your old or unused medications? Well, this Saturday, September 25th, is National Drug TakeBack Day where you can properly dispose of your unwanted prescriptions and have a hand in keeping pharmaceuticals out of our wastestream and our water supplies. Below is a listing of drop-off locations that should be pretty convenient. (Please feel free to pass this message along to any friends and family.)

Also, tomorrow at the Austin City Council meeting, a resolution will be introduced for a long-term program for pharmaceutical recovery. Normally, incineration is the industry standard for getting rid of these medications, but the broader concept of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) or Producer TakeBack should be pushed, instead. Just like in the computer industry, we can make sure the manufacturers of pharmaceuticals are accountable for collecting and properly disposing of their old or unused products rather than putting the financial burden on local governments and taxpayers. ***This just in– In response to the Council’s pharmaceuticals proposal, CTZWA Board Member, Robin Schneider, wrote a Letter to the Editor (LTE) of the Austin American-Statesman on the issue of Producer TakeBack for Medications. It should be published in the coming days leading up to the national event on Saturday. If you’d like to write your own LTE on this issue or other issues, just click here:
